Cornet Conspiracy 2005
Tentative Schedule
Update: 04/27/08
THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EXPERIENCE
SUNDAY, MAY 22nd - Sunday, for those arriving early enough, we will get together at Robb's Shop (LAX & Robb's House).
MONDAY, MAY 23rd - Monday morning we can get show and tell into full swing and hopefully time for questions on restoration, making parts etc. Please give Robb any feedback on what techniques he could demonstrate so he can be prepared (don't be shy; there are no secrets!) After lunch we will travel to Pomona College in Claremont (about 20 minutes away) to visit the Fiske Museum where Al Rice, the curator, will take additional cornets out of storage for us to see. Al Rice at the Fiske Museum is going to great lengths to make sure that our visit there will be outstanding. We're hoping to arrange a sit-in with an old-time brass band as we did last year.
TUESDAY, MAY 24th - Tuesday morning we will drive down to Anaheim for a tour of Kanstul Musical Instruments and have lunch down there afterwards. Depending on how early we return, we will meet at the shop for more show and tell or go straight to Robb's House for pizza.
THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA EXCURSION
WEDNESDAY, MAY 25th - Wednesday morning we will hit the road, escape the city and travel up to Paso Robles to the Caparone Winery, where Marc will host more show-and-tell (in a much larger room) and the jam session (wine tasting, vintage car show and tours as well, for those who are interested). If someone can supply some old band arrangements, we can have a brass band performance in the afternoon, with the jam session happening in the evening. We'll have a barbeque out at the winery on Wednesday evening, but there are quite a few good restaurants in Paso for breakfast or lunch on Wednesday. Also, there are plenty of wineries for those who'd like to go tasting, or you can visit Hearst Castle which is about 40 minutes away. (for those companions who are not cornet collectors!)
THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
THURSDAY, MAY 26th -Thursday morning the Conspiracy heads north again to the San Francisco Bay Area (2 1/2 hours drive from Paso Robles) where we will visit Sandy Craig's Hornucopia. We will have lunch at collector Kevin Boles House. Kevin has nice brass band arrangements and non-matched sets of OTS and bell up/front period instruments for us to use. Kevin regularly has gatherings of 10 to 30 musicians at his house, so his house is well set up for it. We will finish up with a relaxing evening at Eric Totman's House in Livermore for dinner and more socializing and horn sharing with other Bay Area collectors. Those of you that like other brass wind instruments besides cornets will enjoy the rest of Eric's collection (www.horncollector.com). Eric also has a large brass band and musician photo collection that ranges from the 1860's - 1930's. Eric's cell phone number is 925-640-0335
FRIDAY - MONDAY, MAY 27th - May 30th - Friday this trek ends up in Sacramento (1 1/2 hours drive from Livermore) at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee (www.sacjazz.com). This Jazz Jubilee is an experience not to be missed by traditional jazz enthusiasts and starts on Friday and goes through Monday. For those not familiar with this event, it is supposed to be the largest Jazz Jubilee in the world with over 135 bands performing in 38 different venues. Many venues are located in the historic "Old Sacramento" river front area that has been restored to its original 1849 California Gold Rush era buildings. There is much to do in Old Sac with many restaurants, bars, shops, river paddle boats, steam train rides, the national train museum, and much more. Those attending this event will be invited to participate in a historic CC'05 photo session in 1860's attire (supplied) with their 1860's brass wind instruments. This photo session will take place in a photo studio in Old Sac. The date and time of this photo will be determined by those interested in participating in this photo.
